Plans:
Our plan is to create a
major university with extensive undergraduate and graduate programs. At the
undergraduate level, the University of Sacramento will offer a strong
liberal arts core curriculum. The core curriculum is a series
of courses, not merely a number of credits specified by
subject area. These courses are the shared patrimony of any
University of Sacramento graduate, and constitute the backbone of the
student’s intellectual formation.
We will emphasize the development of a philosophical
habit of mind to form an individual who is accustomed
to thinking logically and critically. We seek to communicate: a
love for truth; intellectual curiosity; enthusiasm for the richness and
ideals of Judeo-Christian as well as classical culture; a sincere
appreciation for everything that is authentically human; a taste for
debate; and an understanding of the contemporary cultural milieu. This
perspective should ideally grow to be the firm foundation and
reference point for the student´s personal and moral life.
In addition to
the core liberal arts curriculum, students will also have the
opportunity to select a major from a variety of disciplines
in the liberal arts as well as in fields of
more immediate career preparation, for example, engineering, journalism, nursing, etc.
The University will also provide its undergraduate
students with an integrated college experience that will enable them
to become leaders in business, government, and academia. We will
offer:
Significant leadership training opportunities
Substantial integration of technology in the learning environment
Internship opportunities
International exchange programs
Finally, while we will expect our faculty to research
and publish significantly in their fields, their first priority will
be to teach and mentor undergraduate students. In fact, our
campus and our buildings will be designed to facilitate this essential interaction.
The University will also
have extensive graduate programs to complement its undergraduate programs. In
fact, given the need to initiate the undergraduate program on
a residential campus, we have launched the University with graduate
programs while we continue planning the residential campus.
Other planning details
The University’s main campus will be built
on a beautiful knoll and valley just east of Sacramento. We
will continue to be a presence in downtown Sacramento (e.g.,
some graduate programs, continuing education, etc.).
The University’s student body will grow to approximately
5,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students by 2035.
We are committed to building a
beautiful campus that will be a place of reflection and
will be consistent with the best of local and regional
architecture.
Fr. Robert Presutti, the President, blesses the future site of
the University of Sacramento.
